Whimsy!!!! Oy vey. It has nothing at all to do with being cheap or not. In fact, these ones aren't cheap. They come from Nance Klehm's personal collection. And, we're not looking for a substitute for oregano. We're looking to do something more important, which is right there in the text. Or, go here, and read again: http://www.arthurmag.com/2009/02/18/seeding-the-hidden-dimension-with-an-acre-of-poppies/

Is there a reason poppies are being used? Is it because they're cheapest?

As lovely as poppies are, I'd love to see native Mid-Atlantic plants being reintroduced into urban spaces. Plants like horsemint (Monarda punctata) are drought tolerant and are also a great substitute for oregano.
