This aerial footage showing one of the world’s last uncontacted tribes living in the Amazon rainforest of Brazil was filmed by the BBC for their new series “Human Planet” and released via uncontactedtribes.org on February 4, 2011.

“Without proof they exist, the outside world won’t support them,” says José Carlos Morelos, whose job it is to monitor the endangered tribe’s land and protect it from invaders. “One image of them has more impact than a thousand reports.”

Many leagues below a murky, oil-filled pocket of subtropical waters off the southern coast of the United States, abyss creatures continue to communicate through light and vibration. In the “midnight zone,” a formidable black swallower feeds off of a hydrothermal vent, shrouded in a darkness thicker and blacker than deepest outer space. An opalescent dumbo octopus floats serenely by, her shiny coating picking up hints of a nearby jellyfish‘s flashing stroboscopic light, which illuminates a pulsating haze of red around them. On the very bottom of the ocean floor, a sea dandelion sits quietly, swaying back and forth to the rhythm of tectonic plates stirring below her…

This week we arrived at Newtown Radio as sunset was descending over Bushwick, and a mysterious blue and purple mist had started to fill the neighborhood. Feeling inexplicably sleepy, we stuck a little mugwort under the studio’s couch cushions, sprawled out on the floor, and immediately began to dream our way into Arthur Radio Voyage #15. We found ourselves in a lucid haze, lost in some kind of other-worldly superstore. This week Arthur Radio decided to set its boat out on a southward-flowing current, with special guests Pete Vogl and Willow Gibbons (who together make the musical duo Bow Ribbons) at the helm. We bid goodbye to the stone grey waves lapping around the edges of Manhattan, passed through the tepid manatee-filled waters of Florida, and traveled onwards until we reached the hot swells surrounding the coast of Brazil. The plan was to eventually catch up with a family of Humpback whales in Ecuador, to learn of their beautiful songs and hopefully join them in chorus.

We paused to relax on a calm patch of water by the beach, where tropical birds flitted about chirping messages to one another in nearby Pepper trees. Pete took out his guitar and sat next to Willow, who stood on the deck in the sunshine, ready to sing. Closing our eyes, we listened with the sun shimmering orange on our eyelids as Willow belted out the lines, “I will spend a lifetime in space, I will make a nest in this place…”

A scene-by-scene recap of this week’s episode by DJ Visitation Rites:

ACT 1
Scene 1, Off Air
In which DJs Ivy Meadows and Visitation Rites arrive at the Newtown Radio studio ready to set up but are hypnotized by a 25-minute bongo-laden siren dirge — Dreamcolour’s “Spiritual Celebration” — at the tail end of Sunday Brunch with Chocolate Bobka. Unbeknownst to them, the song spills fifteen minutes into the beginning of their set.

Scene 2, Aside
Meanwhile, Peter Pearson, Derek Muro, and Lorna Krier of Brooklyn’s Love Like Deloreans steal away from their home base — a renovated closet space in Bushwick containing some 20 synthesizers — load half of them into a Volvo station wagon, and appear at the station door, successfully breaking the spell that has been cast over Ivy Meadows and Visitation Rites.

ACT 2
Scene 1, On Air
Still haunted by the specter of the siren from Act 1, Ivy Meadows and Visitation Rites attempt to reproduce their experience by layering ambient musics from lands as far and wide as ‘70s Germany, early 21st Century Northampton, and present-day Canada into a single organic continuum.

Scene 2, Aside
In which Love Like Deloreans set up all seven of the synthesizers they brought in the drowsy blink of a Sunday afternoon eye, causing Ivy Meadows and Visitation Rites to suspect that that they too possess supernatural powers. Love Like Deloreans do their best to assuage their fears, suggesting that they are simply “putting the punk back in punctuality.” Exeunt Chocolate Bobka.

ACT 3
Scene 1, On Air
Love Like Deloreans perform the first half of their in-studio. Dancing, Ivy Meadows and Visitation Rites attempt to document the event through Blackberry photos, Tweets, and a FlipCam.

Scene 2, On Air
Love Like Deloreans pause to participate in and informal Q&A with Visitation Rites, touching upon their origins as a group, their cohabitation of the classical world and Brooklyn DIY, their roots in New York minimalism and ‘70s Kosmische, and why the best way to listen to music is while traveling cross-country.

Scene 3, On Air,
Love Like Deloreans perform the second half of their in-studio. Dancing resumes. Ivy Meadows films an excerpt of their set through the anamorphic lens of an oddly shaped water bottle, the results of which can be seen below.

For Transmission #10 of Arthur Radio, we started by visualizing ourselves in a black void, lost in time somewhere between the 1970s and today. Using LED-powered building blocks, we constructed a musical pathway in order to make sense of our surroundings. Brick by colorful brick, we bridged the gap between the oily rainbow pools of German psychedelic krautrock jazziness all the way to the shimmering mists of other-worldly electronic noise being produced by the likes of contemporaries Jonas Reinhardt, Arp, Stellar Om Source, and our very special time-traveling guests, Blondes.

Standing on the other side of the bridge in the murky “now,” we found that transversing between the two realms was easier than we thought. In fact, it seemed that they were always connected by an invisible passage, for the electronic explorers of today were born of very same primordial space sludge that spawned krautrock pioneers Dorothea Raukes, Jean Michel Jarre, Manuel Göttsching and friends, some 40 years ago.

The following description was taken from the back of “The LYTE,” one of the very first audiovisualizers of its kind made in the 1980s. Its sentiment echoes how listening to Transmission #10 makes us feel, and we recommend that you meditate on it for a second before you take that irrevocable plunge, hit “play,” and start time-traveling on your own:

The written word cannot fully describe what the eye and ear can perceive. Tone by tone you see an exact, shimmering definition in light of what you hear. Exotic patterns are born, grow, contract and change shape through an infinity of dazzling complexity; each momentary image a precise electronic expression of the sound you hear…

Download: Arthur Radio Voyage #9: Forest Dwelling with Overture

This week we arrived at the Newtown Radio studio to find it transformed beyond recognition… emerald green vines blanketed the walls, and a lush carpet of multi-colored mosses and swamp grass covered the floor. We pushed our way through a thicket of elephant ears into a sun-dappled glade, where our guests Jason & Aya (otherwise known as Overture, the minds behind the cover of the recent Six Organs of Admittance/Azul split LP), were seated on bed of soft purple and magenta leaves. We listened under the shade of a poplar tree as they read tales of fantastical landscapes where landslides, floods and rainfall had created a boggy wonderland full of dancing musical animals, rhubarb babies, and a wise old vegetable lady…

After the storytelling, we ventured into the glade to ask our enchanting guests more about these worlds they had woven before our eyes. The first reading, it turns out, was inspired by a spine-tinglingly beautiful animation that the the super-artist duo made for Múm‘s song “Rhubarbidoo” from their 2007 album Go Go Smear The Poison Ivy.

The second reading was inspired by the following three animations, which the artists made for experimental piano maestro Hauschka‘s 2008 album Ferndorf:

The third reading, a story in which “An old man confronts his fears, traveling across a personal landscape to realize and accept his path,” was based on an animation Overture made for the song “Bless” by Icelandic musician Kira Kira, which is featured on her 2008 album Our Map to the Monster Olympics. This video was just released to the world officially yesterday — Enjoy!!!

With a collection of new and broken needles that she calls “pencils of sound” and a selection of records, she creates electro-acoustic sound pieces. Chavez made her New York City debut in a duet with Thurston Moore, collaborated with Otomo Yoshihide as part of the 2007 Wien Modern Festival, and recently shared a stage with Pauline Oliveros and Lydia Lunch during Vienna’s Phonofemme Festival 2009.

Sunday was a very special day for Arthur Radio. We never thought that co-host Hairy Painter would return to Brooklyn after spending a month building Mardi Gras floats and dancing to “sissy bounce” music in Nola, but he surprised us at the station door — out of breath, suitcase in hand — right when we were about to go on. And we never thought we would be able to cram one sound engineer, one baby, five DJs, half a dozen synthesizers, and all six members of Excepter inside the Newtown Radio studio, but somehow we pulled the whole production off without a hitch. Following the release of their new double album Presidence on Paw Tracks last Tuesday, (“Presidence Day observed”), Excepter graced the Arthur airwaves with a set so on point it caused unnoticed seismic shifts beneath a 24-hour techno-rave in Istanbul. Emilie Friedlander (Visitation Rites) engaged Jon Fell Ryan in a wobbly Q&A, and Ivy Meadows and Hairy Painter piled on layer upon layer of elliptical wax to set the scene…

These are all from the Spring of 1998. I was living alone on the corner of Metropolitan and Driggs in Williamsburg, trying to merge cartooning and abstract design with concepts of American Folk mythology and Jungian sex magick. No real art world aim in mind; these were done for reasons of personal development.

Last week on Presidents’ Day, Excepter dropped their new album, “Presidence.” Two days later, a show of drawings by band member JFR came to a close at Fingered Gallery in Bushwick, Brooklyn. In light of these seemingly aligned (and undeniably cosmic) events, Arthur Radio is excited to announce that Excepter will be performing an unbridled freeform transmission, including a live interview session with Emilie Friedlander (Visitation Rites), this Sunday from 4-6pm EST on newtownradio.com. The “tundra” (from the Finnish word tunturi, meaning “treeless heights”) is otherwise known as that ribbon of latitude on our planet where the landscape shifts from tall trees and flowering bushes to comparatively shrimpy shrubs and frost-covered blankets of moss, brightly colored lichens, and delicate tufts of sedge (or “Arctic grass.”) The top layer of vegetation only thaws and grows for a few months a year, revealing to us a mysterious web of plant life beneath the ice…

Above: Reindeer lichen, an extremely cold-hardy plant most commonly found in the Arctic tundra. The Dena’ina people (native to Alaska) are known to eat this plant (boiled until soft) in dishes with berries, fish, eggs, or lard, and drink its juices to treat a number of physical ailments.

Above: Yellow lichens on a frost-covered Arctic floor, otherwise known in Inuit culture as “Excrement of the Sun.” Scientists have recently discovered anti-tumor, anti-microbial and anti-viral properties in compounds made from lichens.

Above: An Arctic fox takes a nap within the willows. Young Arctic willow leaves contain up to 10 times more vitamin C than an orange, and the bark can be boiled to make a pain-relieving tea.

Above: Last but not least, the Fly-Agaric. This mushroom is found in many areas of the world including scattered about the Alaskan tundra and the Arctic region of Kamchatka (a peninsula in the Russian Far East).

The Koryak people of Kamchatka are known to gather Fly-Agaric mushrooms growing in the roots of sacred birch trees and eat them (either dried or soaked in blueberry juice) as a means of enhancing creative and physical energy (i.e. to “play music all night long,”) among other spiritual and ceremonial purposes. Reindeer also love to eat this mushroom, and are said to act “drunken” under its influence.

Songs of church-goers, miners, and farmers of eastern Kentucky express the joys and sorrows of life among the rural poor. This classic film evocatively illustrates how music and religion help Appalachians maintain their dignity and traditions in the face of change and hardship.

The End of an Old Song -1970 27 min B&W

Filmed in the mountains of North Carolina, this documentary revisits the region where English folklorist Cecil Sharp collected British ballads in the early 1900s. It contrasts the nature of the ballad singers with the presence of the juke box: although the lyrical tradition has changed, the singing style continues. Features Dillard Chandler, who sings with rare intensity and style.

A Short Bio of John Cohen:
His work crosses many disciplines -- both in the arts and sciences, and has been seen on NOVA PBS, at experimental film series, art museums, anthropology film festivals, ethnomusicology conferences, visual anthropology classes, Appalachian studies, the politics of poverty classes, and Andean music & textile exhibitions.

From the late 1950s on, he was involved with the emerging Art world in New York City, and photographed Robert Frank’s production of the film Pull My Daisy about the beat generation- including Jack Kerouac & Alan Ginsberg. He also documented the emergence of Pop Art, and the Cedar Bar, homeplace of the Abstract Expressionist painters. He was part of the music scene from which Bob Dylan emerged in Greenwich Village during the 1960′s. After 1960, the major focuses of his work include Old Time Music (from the Appalachians) and Peruvian projects. He has filmed, photographed and recorded Andean music in Peru, and made an early study and collection of contemporary Andean textiles.

John Cohen’s body of work has been recognized in a wide range of fields: his photographs are in major museum collections and publications, his award winning films have been shown on PBS and BBC and at festivals worldwide. The sound recordings of the New Lost City Ramblers have received several Grammy nominations, and, along with his field recordings, have influenced many musicians -- including Bob Dylan, Jerry Garcia, Ry Cooder -- and shaped the old time fiddle music revival.

John Cohen’s work invites interpretation. Although it has the appearance of a “documentary style” it reflects his own viewpoint as a visual artist. That his body of work is called cross-disciplinary, and he has been labeled a “Renaissance man,” doesn’t detract from the perception of his art as something which emanates directly from his own personal vision.

Tony Martin is a founder of art works using light, and has created seminal new media works since the 1960′s. Light Pendulum is a new work that is controlled by site-specific environmental conditions including light, sound, and motion. Light Pendulum functions both as a stand-alone kinetic sculpture as well as a temporal instrument used in a performance-based setting. Light Pendulum is comprised of a six-inch diameter glass pendulum suspended with nylon line from the installation space ceiling. An LED pin-light is installed at the top of the line. The pendulum’s motion is caused by the earth’s rotation and conditions of air movement. A large parabolic mirrored dish is installed directly underneath the pendulum. Receptors and sensors are positioned at the center of the dish. These receptors function as photocells, photovoltaic cells, and other signal and current producing and regulating components.

Michelle Nagai utilizes sound, physicality and concept to create site-specific performances, installations, radio broadcasts, dances, walks and other interactions that address the human state in relationship to its setting. These works and activities explore the exchange of perception between performer and audience/viewer. Nagai recognizes transmission, reception and “limbo” as continuously shifting, highly interactive states of being. She engages these states in her working process in order to open up the field of perception and action beyond that which she is herself capable of comprehending, making or doing.

Cult 60’s singer-songwriter Vashti Bunyan takes a break from recording her new album with Andy Cabic from Vetiver to perform a one-off, exclusive acoustic set at the 92YTribeca venue in New York on Friday, October 16, in support of the screening of the critically acclaimed documentary Vashti Bunyan : From Here To Before.

For many cult artists, rediscovery comes too late, they never live to know their art has been reappraised, is being loved by generations not even born when they were at work. In the case of Vashti Bunyan, the “Godmother of Freak Folk” and muse to artists such as Devendra Banhart and the Animal Collective, 30 years of obscurity ended with the rediscovery in 2000 of her lost classic album “Just Another Diamond Day” and her subsequent reintroduction into a mainstream she was never part of in the first place. The fact that the record was inspired by a very British road trip – an end to end journey across the country by horse and carriage – has only helped mythologise Vashti’s life and career. Ben Ratliff of The New York Times describes it as “a 700-mile journey [that] took two summers. Her story — or what is known of it from her interviews and her songs — is a perfectly preserved hippie tale, full of ideals, heartbreak and sleeping outdoors, and not arriving on time.”

From Here To Before is a wonderfully evocative film that retraces Vashti’s extraordinary journey across the British Isles, setting it against the backdrop of Vashti preparing for her first ever high profile London concert. It also features rare interviews with music luminaries Andrew Loog Oldham, Joe Boyd and the recently deceased Robert Kirby who provide an honest and informative insight into the most creative period of recorded popular music and Vashti’s place within it.

Following the screening on Friday, October 16, Vashti Bunyan and director Kieran Evans will take questions from the audience and then later that evening, Vashti will grace the stage at 92YTribeca for a rare acoustic performance. It promises to be a very special night. Support on the night will come from folk experimentalist Matteah Baim.

Additionally, following the screening of From Here To Before on Saturday, October 17, Vashti Bunyan and director Kieran Evans will be in attendance to answer questions from the audience.

Important Records presents:

Sun Boxes are an environment to enter and exit. It’s comprised of twenty speakers operating independently each powered by solar panels. There is a different guitar sample in each box all playing together making the composition. The guitar samples are all of different lengths so the whole piece keeps evolving.

Participants are encouraged to walk amongst the speakers. It sounds different inside of the array. There is a different sense of space inside. Certain speakers will be closer and louder therefore the piece will sound different to different people in different positions throughout the array. Creating a unique experience for everyone.

There are no batteries involved. The Sun Boxes are reliant on the sun. When the sun sets the music stops. The piece changes as the length of the day changes. Making the participants aware of the cycle of the day.

Of approximately 6,000 languages currently spoken on Earth, many are not yet recorded, and less than half are being taught by elders to children of the next generation. Every two weeks or so an elder dies, and with them another language vanishes from the face of the planet. In Africa, 80% of the continent’s 2,000 languages are still unnamed, unwritten, and disappearing faster than they can be traced. At this rate, over half of the world’s languages may disappear within the 21st Century, taking along with them an immeasurable “wealth of knowledge about history, culture, the natural environment, and the human brain” (National Geographic: Enduring Voices).

This loss of languages has tremendous implications for our future as the human race; the speakers of these unique modes of communication carry with them a different way of being, seeing and processing life in this world that we can all learn from. As modern culture becomes further alienated from the natural world, we must work even harder to respect and learn from these cultures who believe “the earth itself can only exist because it is being breathed into being by human consciousness” (Wade Davis, anthropologist and ethnobotanist). If we are not to destroy our natural world, we must try to better understand our impact upon it. If these marginalized cultures become extinct, we will lose a tremendously valuable record of humanity’s evolution and evidence of all that the human mind is capable of:

A language is not just a body of vocabulary or a set of grammatical rules; A language is a flash of the human spirit, it is a vehicle through which the soul of each particular culture comes into the material world. “Basque abstract artist José Antonio Sistiaga painted directly onto film with homemade inks to create this silent 1970 feature. But Sistiaga’s strangely titled work… is different from the films of Stan Brakhage, who didn’t come to film from painting and had his own rhythm. […] [I]ts combination of color and 35-millimeter ‘scope (with about half an hour in black and white) yields the kind of spectacle one associates with musicals and [science fiction] epics.” — Jonathan Rosenbaum

A hand-painted masterpiece of the 1970s; a legendary band of the 1980s. Sistiaga’s rarely-screened ere erera baleibu icik subua aruaren is a work of uncompromising beauty that absolutely deserves a wider appreciation. Savage Republic, one of the unrecognized godfathers of post-rock, formed roughly three decades ago in the midst of the Los Angeles punk rock scene and abruptly disbanded in 1989. In recent years, they’ve reformed and their unique sound (somewhat akin to a Middle Eastern surf band backed by the rhythm section from Joy Division) is as compelling and inexorable as ever. Original members Ethan Port and Thom Fuhrmann, joined by Alan Waddington and Kerry Dowling, will perform their newly commissioned score to Sistiaga’s prodigious work (presented in a stunning 35mm print from Paris.) DJ Michael Stock of Part Time Punks will be on-hand to man the decks, spinning tunes during the pre-show!

Hermitage is very pleased to announce the screening of Nathaniel Dorsky’s films Sarabande & Winter this Friday at The Arm in Brooklyn. Both of these films were completed in 2008, and shot on 16mm kodachrome.

Last week I had the pleasure of attending Lord Whimsy’s (Arthur-sponsored) Terrarium Workshop in Philly. Among many other pieces of invaluable botanical information, he shared one of the most inventive graffiti-making methods that I’ve ever encountered; using cheap ingredients (found moss, water and buttermilk or beer), it is possible to blend up a moss-spreading concoction that can be painted with a brush onto any stone surface (such as a garden wall, walkway or even the exterior of your home) to create the living design of your wildest imagination. If it has always been your dream to have living walls, this could be the start of something beautiful…

Lord Whimsy’s Guide to GROWING YOUR OWN MOSS:

Try spreading your carpet of moss with this method: find and clean a clump of moss. Add equal parts water and buttermilk (beer apparently also works well). Add a couple tablespoons of sugar. Mix in a blender: the consistency should be soupy, but not too watery or thick. Pour wherever you’d like moss to grow. Moist, shady spots are best. You can also apply the moss slurry onto surfaces of stones or walls with a paintbrush.

Alongside artists such as Nam Jun Paik and Yoko Ono, Jeff Perkins was a member of the Fluxus group in the mid-1960s and later in the early ’70s, an innovator and practitioner of psychedelic light shows as a member of California’s Single Wing Turquoise Bird (who played live along with rock bands like The Velvet Underground and The Grateful Dead). First performed in the late ’60s and early 70’s in Venice, CA, his light projection pieces are highly minimal but not at all static. This evening, Jeff will be performing a live set (with a special musical guest), using hundreds of slides and four projectors. The slow flickering dissolves, from patterns to minimal shapes, will optically trick the mind into thinking it’s a constant moving image — a show not to be missed.

That porcelain cup resembles my skull. I am holding the cup tight with my hand when out of my arm another absurd arm sprouts like a grafted branch and the hand pending from that arm grabs the cup in a flash and hurls it over my shoulder to the floor. Since my arm is defending the cup to the death, the shattered pieces of course are my skull which resembles the porcelain cup. If my arm had budged before the branching arm crept like a snake back into it the white paper holding back the flood water would have torn. But just as before my arm defends the porcelain cup to the death.
