LAist’s February, 2008 interview with Arthur editor Jay Babcock

One Response

  1. tuesday says:

i’m living in Holland right now and I love Arthur so much that i would love to purchase a subscription, but i’m going to be moving around so much it doesn’t seem practical. But when I make it to LA next year i’m going to have tea at India Sweets and Spices or run into at a river or slipstreaming down some trail or at McCabe’s and make a donation.
i’m 20 now, but i will never forget how excruciatingly aggravating it was to miss a stop on a tour just because i was 17, or even 20 because of 18+ and 21+ shows. i vow to myself to never forget this. i am a strong believer that music should be available to everyone that loves it and that the sale of alcohol should have nothing to do with it. i’m starting to really resent the way things are done in america. here shows cost what you would pay, it’s reasonable, and it’s all ages. which also, i think, is good for the performers, because that will mean that they won’t have to worry or think about playing to a half empty venue just because most of their fans that go to see them are under 18, or simply can’t afford the price of tickets, and they won’t be playing to apathetic drunk regulars.
i do believe that America has good culture, not society, but America is IT right now for new music, and i don’t see why we can’t be progressive enough with the platforms we use to present our culture to our own people.
so in conclusion to THAT rant, i’m thrilled that you guys are thinking about that issue and doing something about it. i do believe that it starts with one and when others see that it works (because they are too weak or scared to do it first) they will follow suit.
I also really love the idea of a transgenerational counterculture. i’ve met a lot of really slinkster older people and i always wish that they were more comfortable in spending time and connecting with younger people. i think what ties people together includes spirit and passion and ideas and those things are ageless. i don’t mind dancing with you because you’re 50, we’re both here because we love the music, so let’s let go and have fun. i think a lot of older people are really particular about the volume and mix, so i’m glad that’s another point you broached. i like loud, but it needs to be mixed well, but i also won’t complain about a lower volume. i do want to get lost in the music, so as long as it’s loud enough to allow that, i’m set.
things seem so much easier here in the music industry, i feel like the industry in the states is ridiculously exclusive to the point where it may even become detrimental to themselves.

i really like the redesign and especially to make the entire magazine colour.
okay that’s all i have to say about this right now
lots of LOVE and good music
    tuesday
